Greetings of the day. I am here to enlighten you with Rote learning and hands-on learning and which one is better. Rote learning is the learning technique where you memorize concepts. You repeat certain things and thus memorize it. The more the repetition, the more will be the recall of the subject. Hands-on learning is the education form where children learn through doing things or by experience. Instead of simply listening or memorizing, students are made to do activities and solve problems related to their subject of study.
Rote learning is necessary for certain situations. We did this when learning the alphabets, numbers, multiplication table, spellings of words, periodic tables, and anything that we still know in the order of it. When we learn with Rote learning, we tend to remember things when we want to recall it, but it requires repetition. The problem with Rote learning is that it doesn’t promote critical thinking or doesn’t always help in associating things with others. Most of the matter that students memorize for their exams is forgotten after it. Students tend to mug up certain concepts that they cannot understand or comprehend. After the need is over, they conveniently forget it and will have a very tough time trying to remember it later in life when they need it.
Hands-on learning is a more engaging way of learning as it is “learning by doing.” While doing things, students are creating knowledge instead of passively consuming it. This helps them keep the concepts for a longer time in their mind as they engage all their senses to do the activities. Students need to practice what they learned so that they can understand it much better. It also gives them an idea as to how and where their learning can be applied in real life. It also helps them to boost and enhance their creativity.
Creativity needs constant brushing. For that, they need to have hands-on learning. It provides children with new and innovative ways of learning. Each learning session will provide them useful insights, which cannot be obtained with rote learning. It also makes learning interesting and fun and will help them get over the usual boredom of learning.
Hands-on learning has more advantages and effectiveness than rote learning, but to get the best learning experience and results, you should combine rote learning and hands-on learning. Students should memorize certain concepts, but they should also be able to know when and where to apply them appropriately. For instance, in academics, if you want to solve a math problem, you need to memorize your tables and algebraic equation through rote learning, but to solve it, memory alone doesn’t suffice.
You need hands-on or experiential learning to solve it. Your children can learn names and other pieces of information about people. But if they have to connect it with a person, their brain’s creative side has to work, which can be obtained only through hands-on or experiential learning.
